Lost 5 Pounds

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Actually it’s probably more than that. Livestrong.com is my new best friend. It’s very easy to enter the foods you eat and the activities you do. The charts and graphs for seeing your progress and monitoring where you measure up according to recommended nutritional requirements are great. It’s very easy to see how what you’re eating provides or doesn’t provide the nutrients you should be getting. I’ve made some needed adjustments based on the site feedback and I seem to be shedding a few. Hopefully I will be able to keep it up long-term. As of now the site is free. For something like $50/year you can become a Gold member and get access to more tools and keep unlimited information. It does seem to be supported by advertising. There are some very doubious ads regarding “effortless” weightloss schemes which I think detract considerably from the site’s credibility. Other than that I think it’s one well put together tool that I’ve found easy to use. There are quite a few things you can see on the site, so it might take a few days of use to take it all in.

Food Storage Suppliers

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Looking for a selection of food storage items other than what you can find at Costco? Here are a couple of suppliers that will ship items.

Blue Chip Group, Inc. - They’re located in Salt Lake City. I was able to walk into their location and pick up quite a few items on the spot. They have an extensive price list (12 pages) on their website. You can order online and have items shipped or you can pick up yourself. Prices seemed to be competitive for bulk grains and beans. They had a good selection of freeze dried and dehydrated fruits and vegetables for long term storage.

Walton Feed - They’re located in Idaho. I ordered some things in July. They called me today and the items should be here (Utah) on Monday (November 24). Obviously you need to plan ahead. I haven’t done a close comparison regarding prices, but it’s another option.

Update on Walton Feed: My original order had 3 items - cornmeal, soybeans, and quinoa. I received 1 item - cornmeal. I was told they were out of soybeans. The delivery driver handed me an invoice that didn’t have the quinoa but instead listed Mix-Spanish Rice Casserole. I didn’t accept the spanish rice from the driver. I sent an email to Walton Feed with a copy of the original order confirmation which clearly listed the 3 items I originally ordered. Hopefully I’ll be reimbursed in a timely manner for the spanish rice.

MyPyramid.gov

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

This site was created by the US Department of Agriculture. It allows individuals to track their nutrition and exercise. There are commercial systems that do the same thing and probably have more bells and whistles. The nice part about this site is that it’s free.
